Separate traction from drivetrain
AWD distributes power to more wheels, but every car still relies on tire contact with the road. Transport Canada recommends four winter tires in cold, snowy or icy conditions, including on vehicles with AWD. A heavy SUV with AWD can still slide when the driver brakes or corners too quickly.
Plan a complete winter setup
Fit four compatible winter tires, inspect pressure and tread, and learn how the vehicle's stability systems work. Check provincial tire rules for the routes you use. Drive according to visibility and road conditions rather than assuming a drivetrain badge makes a difficult trip safe.

AWD may make it easier to pull away from the sign, but it does not guarantee a short stop at the next intersection. Four winter tires, lower speed and extra space improve the margin for braking and steering. Check the forecast before making a long trip.
