Check the posted route
Many designated routes require suitable winter tires or chains from October 1 to March 31; higher-risk or mountain routes may continue through April 30. Signs and the province's current map matter for the road you will use. Do not assume a trip is exempt because it starts in a coastal city.
Inspect the tires
B.C. specifies accepted markings and tread requirements for passenger vehicles on designated highways. Check the current provincial page before travel, especially if crossing into the Interior or mountains. A legal minimum is not a promise of good grip in severe conditions; adjust the trip to the weather.
A coastal-to-interior trip
A trip that begins on a mild coastal road may cross a signed mountain route with a longer winter-tire requirement. Check every major segment on the B.C. government map before leaving. The actual route and signage determine which dates and tire or chain rules to follow.
