Change your driving early
Turn on headlights when visibility drops, reduce speed smoothly and leave more room for braking. Make sure wipers and tires are in good condition before a storm. If spray or downpour makes it hard to see, pull off at a safe place and wait rather than trying to maintain your normal pace.
Avoid floodwater
Environment and Climate Change Canada warns drivers not to drive on a flooded road because the surface beneath may be damaged or hidden. Take a different route and follow local closures. After a water-related loss, contact your insurer and read the specific damage coverage in your policy.
When a low road floods
If you encounter water covering the street, turn around where it is safe and follow another route. You cannot judge the roadway or water depth from the driver's seat. Report a closure to local authorities when appropriate; no appointment is worth driving into a flooded section.
