Contact the insurer before work starts
Describe structural changes, additions, major electrical or plumbing work, and periods when the home will be empty or occupied by contractors. Ask whether the policy remains in force during the work and if builder or contractor insurance is needed. Document the work and retain permits where applicable.
Revisit the insured value
After renovations, ask for an updated replacement-cost assessment and check limits for new fixtures or equipment. Notify the insurer when work is complete. A home estimate based on an old property description may understate the protection you need.
A major kitchen project
Before removing walls or rewiring, describe the scope and expected timeline to the insurer. Ask whether contractor work and periods of limited occupancy alter your protection. After completion, provide details of the updates so the rebuilding estimate and home description can be reviewed.
Quick check
- Report the project early
- Check work-period coverage
