Separate phases of use
Ask your personal insurer what applies when the app is off, when you are waiting for a request and when a paid trip is underway. Platform and provincial arrangements can differ. Our rideshare checkbox only widens a hypothetical budget; it does not certify that an Uber or Lyft trip is insured.
Get confirmation in writing
Tell the insurer the platform, vehicle, province and expected use. Ask about damage to your own car, liability, deductible and what happens if the platform coverage changes. Delivery work may be treated differently from carrying passengers, so mention both if relevant.
Ask about the app timeline
Describe a full working session: the app is off, then online while waiting, then a ride is accepted, a passenger is in the car, and the trip ends. Ask which policy responds in each phase and what deductible would apply to your car. Keep the response for your records before driving for pay.
Quick check
- Disclose platform work
- Check each trip phase
