Inspect the complete set
Look for uneven wear, cuts, bulges and the condition of the tread across each tire. Measure tread with a proper gauge instead of relying only on appearance. Provincial legal minimums and practical winter performance are separate questions; B.C. publishes a specific minimum for designated winter routes.
Address the cause of unusual wear
A single tire wearing faster may signal alignment, pressure or suspension issues. Have a tire shop assess concerns before a long trip and ensure all tires are appropriate for the vehicle. Replace a tire that is unsafe rather than relying on a tread-depth number alone.
Uneven wear on one wheel
If one winter tire has much less tread on its inner edge, replacing only the visibly worst tire may miss an alignment or suspension problem. Ask a shop to inspect the cause and advise on a safe set. For a B.C. highway trip, also verify the province's marking and tread requirements.
