The driver and their history
Insurers may consider how long you have held a licence, past claims, driving convictions and insurance history. A new driver may receive a different quote from someone with a long record, even for the same vehicle. When comparing quotes, enter the same drivers and use the same history for each insurer.
The particular vehicle
Make, model, model year, safety equipment, repair cost and claims experience matter. Vehicle labels such as “sedan” and “SUV” are useful starting categories, but they hide large model-by-model differences. The Insurance Bureau of Canada’s How Cars Measure Up resource helps you compare claims experience before choosing a car.
Location, use and coverage
Where the car is kept and how it is used may affect risk. A commuter, an occasional driver and someone using a vehicle for paid rides can have different insurance needs. You should tell an insurer about delivery or rideshare driving rather than assume a personal policy covers it.
Compare the same liability limit, collision and comprehensive choices, deductible and optional protections across quotes. Otherwise, a lower premium might simply reflect less coverage or a higher amount you would pay after a claim.
Province matters
Auto insurance systems differ across Canada. British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan provide mandatory basic coverage through government insurers, while Québec combines public bodily injury protection with private property damage insurance. Other provinces and territories have their own minimum requirements. The IBC coverage guide summarizes these differences.
A useful way to compare quotes
- Write down your vehicle’s exact year, make and model.
- Use the same listed drivers and annual driving estimate.
- Match coverage limits and deductibles across each quote.
- Ask about exclusions, payment fees and possible discounts.
- Read the policy wording before buying.
