Two parts of protection

Québec’s SAAQ public plan provides bodily-injury protection after a road accident. Its insurance contribution is paid through the driver’s licence or vehicle registration; a private car-policy premium is a different charge. Add these costs separately when planning your overall driving budget.

What private insurance covers

Québec requires private civil liability coverage (Section A). Damage or theft coverage for your own car (Section B) is generally optional under the law, although a lease or loan agreement can require it. Compare collision, theft and deductible terms as well as the premium; the lowest price may reflect a different level of protection.

A practical comparison

Ask for quotes for your exact car, all drivers, driving use, address, liability limit and deductible. If you drive for Uber, Lyft or delivery, tell your insurer about paid use. Keep the SAAQ contribution out of comparisons between private insurer premiums. Our calculator shows only a broad, hypothetical private-policy range and cannot tell you which policy will cover your situation.
