Start with the legal requirement
Québec-registered vehicles generally need winter tires until March 15; designated B.C. routes may require them into late March or April. Elsewhere, check local requirements and specific highways. A calendar date that works in one province may be too early for another.
Then check actual conditions
Transport Canada explains that winter tires retain flexibility in colder temperatures; around 7°C is a useful temperature reference, not a legal switch date. Consider repeated overnight freezes, mountain trips and late storms before fitting summer tires. After switching, inspect tread and set cold tire pressures correctly.
Two drivers, different timing
A city driver whose overnight temperatures have warmed may choose a spring changeover sooner than someone who still drives mountain highways. Both should first check the applicable provincial rule. Use local weather and upcoming travel, not only a date on a social-media calendar.
