Plan for being stationary
Keep warm clothing or blankets, a flashlight, charged phone and power bank, water, suitable snacks, first-aid supplies, scraper and shovel. Consider your route, passengers and weather when adding items. Tell someone your travel plan if you are heading into a remote area.
Use the kit alongside a travel plan
Check the vehicle's fuel or charge level and official road conditions before departure. If stranded, call for help and follow local emergency guidance. Keep exhaust outlets clear of snow if operating the engine for warmth, and do not take unnecessary risks walking in poor visibility.
Match the kit to your route
A short urban commute and a long rural night drive require different preparation. For the rural trip, check cell coverage, road advisories and fuel or battery range; pack enough warmth and water for the passengers. Review the kit each autumn so batteries, medication and supplies are usable.
